DC Universe’s Stargirl Casting Breakdown Surfaces

A new Stargirl series will be debuting on DC Universe alongside series like Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing and Titans sometime in 2019 following the new streaming service’s launch this autumn. Stargirl was first announced during Comic-Con International in San Diego and will feature a fresh take on the titular hero, also known as Courtney Whitmore, as well as the seminal Justice Society of America.

With the casting process for Stargirl currently underway, the official breakdown on what viewers can expect from this iteration of the character has reportedly been revealed. As reported by That Hashtag Show, “The series is looking to cast an 18+-year-old actress, of any ethnicity, to play a 15-year-old Courtney.”

DC Universe’s Stargirl will mark the character’s third live-action appearance. The role has previously been played by Britt Irvin and Sarah Grey in Smallville and Legends of Tomorrow, respectively. With that in mind, it’s understandable why the casting call is so broad, as the character has already received comics-accurate adaptations on the aforementioned shows.

The casting breakdown also describes Courtney as being an “intelligent, compassionate and athletic young woman,” as well as “witty” and an “incredibly kind individual.” What follows is a brief rundown on Courtney’s origin as Stargirl, in which she was forced to leave her perfect life in Los Angeles to move in with her mother’s new husband in Nebraska. She then learns that her new stepfather was once a superhero’s sidekick and decides she’s going to take his old equipment for a spin, inspiring a new generation of costumed heroes in the process.

“Stargirl follows High School sophomore Courtney Whitmore who inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past,” An official DC press release from July reads. “This new DC Universe series reimagines Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in a fun, exciting and unpredictable series premiering in 2019, produced by Warner Bros. Television, Mad Ghost Productions and Berlanti Productions.”

Stargirl was originally created by legendary DC scribe Geoff Johns, who based the character on his sister, Courtney, who tragically died in a 1996 plane explosion. Johns, who is also the founder of Mad Ghost Productions, will now serve as both a writer and executive producer for DC Universe’s new take on Stargirl. An exact release date has yet to be revealed.
