Doctor Strange Director Exits Snowpiercer Pilot, Criticizes Showrunner

Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson has exited TNT’s Snowpiercer pilot, based on the 2013 film of the same name from Bong Joon-ho, citing radical creative differences with new showrunner Graeme Manson.

In a post to his Twitter account, Derrickson lauded Josh Friedman’s script while proclaiming the pilot he shot from that script as his best work. “The 72-page Snowpiercer TV pilot script by @Josh_Friedman is the best I’ve ever read,” Derrickson wrote. “The feature-length pilot I made from that script may be my best work. The new show runner has a radically different vision for the show. I am forgoing my option to direct the extreme reshoots.”

Manson, who co-created the sci-fi thriller Orphan Black, took over the reins of the Snowpiercer series from Josh Friedman four months ago. While Friedman’s departure was also labeled under creative differences, he denied those claims in a tweet back in February. “I didn’t ‘exit’ over creative differences. TNT insisted that I be removed from show running duties because they didn’t think I’d be compliant,” Friedman wrote. “Hopefully they found someone more to their liking.”

Snowpiercer, which will star Daveed Diggs and Jennifer Connelly, is set seven years after an environmental catastrophe has forced the remainder of the world’s population onto a massive train that constantly circles the globe. Intense class division has forced the train’s poorer occupants into the backmost cars while the rich live in luxury in the front, resulting in a revolution and subsequent class warfare.
