First Swamp Thing TV Series Character Details Emerge

As casting begins for the Swamp Thing TV series, character details on the supporting cast have begun to surface.

According to That Hashtag Show, DC Entertainment is looking to cast supporting character Matthew Cable. The casting announcement calls for a man in his mid-30s to play Cable, who — in this adaptation — is the town sheriff and Abby Arcane’s former love interest who struggles with anger issues of his own. While his exact role in the upcoming TV adaptation is still being kept under wraps, he may be involved investigating the murder of Alec Holland.

Matthew Cable originally debuted as a government agent who failed to protect Alec Holland in 1972’s Swamp Thing #1 by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. The character later married Abby, before being driven insane and resurrected from death as a raven in the pages of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman.

In addition to Cable, the casting announcement calls for the series’ as-yet unnamed villain, a “smart, slick and cunning” antagonist in his late 40s to early 50s. Given the age range, it is not a far leap to assume the villain may be longtime Swamp Thing foe Anton Arcane, who is Abby’s father. During the New 52, the elder Arcane orchestrated the death of Alec Holland as part of his nefarious quest for immortality. Other villainous possibilities for the character include General Avery Sunderland, head of the Sunderland Corporation, an organization looking to weaponize the plant-based superhero.

Filming on Swamp Thing is expected to begin this fall for a 2019 release on DC Universe, DC Entertainment’s premium streaming service, which is expected to debut this August. Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman serve as the series’ showrunners, with Aquaman filmmaker James Wan executive producing.
