NBC Revives Timeless For Special Two-Part Series Finale

Timeless survived being canceled by NBC after its first season on the network, but after a second cancellation following Season 2, the show could not find any other network to pick it up for a third season. Instead, NBC will at least give the show a chance to resolve its various storylines in a special two-part series finale.

In a bold attempt to push for a third season, the Season 2 finale of the time traveling series ended with one of the three major characters on the series dead, but with a cliffhanger ending that suggested that there was a chance to change time and save their lost friend. Now, fans will get a chance to see how that will happen.

NBC Entertainment co-president of scripted programming, Lisa Katz, explained, “We’re excited to tell one final chapter to this incredible story. A huge thank you to all — our cast, crew, producers and partners at Sony – who have worked so very hard, and to the fans who kept us on our toes and made sure we did our very best week after week.”

After the show was canceled after Season 1, Sony Television made the bold decision to surrender 50% of the ownership of Timeless to NBC’s sister studio, Universal Television, in exchange for NBC giving the show another chance. After ratings did not improve in Season 2, NBC canceled the show again and Sony and show creators Eric Kripke and Shawn Ryan shopped the show to other networks and streaming services, but the high cost of the series, coupled with its low ratings, made it a tough sell.

After they announced that no other network would pick it up, Ryan was unsure if they would even be able to make NBC’s proposed series finale plan work, financially, so this is a welcome bit of news in that regard.

Kripke and Ryan released the following statement, ““While we wish we could’ve made another dozen seasons of ‘Timeless,’ this is the next best thing. We’re thrilled to take the Lifeboat out for one last spin and bring closure to our story. The studio, network, cast and crew are all doing this for one reason only: the fans. Because they deserve it. Because the fans made this happen and we thank them for their passion, support and helicopters. So? You guys want to get Rufus back or what?”

The air date of the two-part special has not been announced, but it appears likely that it will air in the Winter, either around Thanksgiving or Christmas,
