Netflix Addresses Status of Luke Cage Season 3

Back when Season 1 first dropped on Netflix in 2016, Marvel’s Luke Cage barged out of the gates as a series beloved by both fans and critics. For that reason, it didn’t take long for the popular streaming service to announce that a second season was confirmed. However, here we are now, more than a month after the release of Season 2, and no word has come yet of Season 3. So what is the current status of the series?

Yesterday, during the Netflix presentation at the Television Critics Association, the company’s VP of original content, Cindy Holland addressed the future of its entire crop of Marvel series. According to Deadline, a writer’s room has reportedly been assembled to break Season 3, but Holland confirmed that a third go wasn’t a certainty. “We haven’t made any firm decisions yet,” the VP said.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that fans should be worried. While a third season of Jessica Jones was confirmed soon after Season 2 concluded, it took a good long while for Marvel and Netflix to announce Iron Fist Season 2 and Daredevil Season 3. Holland might simply be waiting to see what the writer’s room has cooked up for Luke Cage before giving the official green light.

Then again, there is always the possibility that a third season hasn’t been confirmed yet because there are other plans being considered for Colter’s Luke Cage. On the screen, just like in the comic books, the character has developed a bond of friendship with Finn Jones’ Danny Rand — something that many fans are hoping leads to a Heroes For Hire spin-off series. Could Netflix be considering such a venture for the two characters, instead of their respective third seasons? It’s certainly possible — after all, Holland also confirmed that Netflix is also considering more spin-off ideas.

Season 2 of Luke Cage ended with Mike Colter’s character embracing a new role in Harlem. As the proprietor of Harlem’s Paradise, the series seemed to set up an interesting road for the character, who would attempt to protect his neighborhood by becoming the newest crime lord of Harlem. The season reached its conclusion with an ominous shot of the lead character, who was on the verge of becoming everything he hates.

For now, we will have to wait to see where Luke’s journey will take him next.
