Netflix, Not Marvel, Controls the Future of Their Co-Produced Shows

While Marvel owns such characters as Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist, it appears that their television futures will ultimately be decided by Netflix.

During a Reddit AMA, Marvel Head of Television Jeph Loeb fielded a couple of questions about what’s in store for the series on the streaming service. Asked by one user whether the popular dramas are intended to “continue indefinitely,” Loeb replied, “That’s really up to Netflix. We love telling those stories!”

Another asked how many seasons where planned for each show, Loeb responded, “That’s a Neflix question. We’ll take whatever they want!”

The announcement last year of Disney’s plans for branded streaming service raised questions about the future of Marvel’s Netflix dramas, but Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Punisher, and any potential spinoffs, will remain on the digital platform. However, any new Marvel television projects seem destined to head elsewhere.

Netflix outbid Amazon and WGN America in 2013 to co-produce the four Marvel series, culminating with The Defenders miniseries. Each of those shows has expanded into additional seasons, with Daredevil also spawning the Punisher spinoff.

The second season of Luke Cage arrives June 22 on Netflix. The second season of Iron Fist is similarly expected to premiere later this year. Daredevil recently wrapped production of its third season, while the filming of The Punisher Season 2 is under way. Last month, Krysten Ritter confirmed that Jessica Jones has been renewed for a third season, which will begin filming “very soon.”
