We Can't Get Enough of Merritt Wever's Charmingly Awkward Emmys Acceptance Speech

Giving an acceptance speech at an award show might seem like an easy task — actors should be used to saying lines in front of people, right? — but there are always a few onstage surprises at the microphone come award season. While some stars, like Darren Criss for instance, came to the Emmys prepared with fully memorized speeches on Monday night, others, like Regina King, seemed genuinely shocked by their wins. When Merritt Wever took the stage to accept the trophy for outstanding supporting actress in a limited series for her work in Godless, it was clear she fell into the latter camp, and we wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

The actress, who wowed critics with her performance as Mary Agnes in the Netflix Western, seemed to have written down a speech on a piece of paper that she took up with her but admitted that her nerves got the best of her. "Oh, I'm so sorry. I really appreciate this. I really hope you don't mistake my fear right now for a lack of gratitude," she told the audience, who couldn't help but chuckle. "I came prepared, and it's bombing already. I wanted to be a grown-up about this!"

Watch her charming acceptance speech ahead, then keep reading to check out more photos from Wever's big night at the Emmys.
